Karachi, April 26, 2017 (PPI-OT): Besides actively engaged in extraction of coal, the Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) has the resolve to do massive plantation in Thar coal block-II area as for the purpose 1,00,000 tree saplings will be planted using saline water that is a direct by-product of mining activity. This was stated by Brig (retired) Tarique Quadir Lakhiar, General Manager Administration and CSR of SECMC, as he addressed the participants of a programme at Ansari Green Park in Thar coalfield block-II to mark the Earth Day.
A combined Karachi-based delegation of National Forum for Environment and Health (NFEH) and CSR Club of Pakistan visiting Thar coalfields attended the programme. It was informed on the occasion that some 19,000 saplings of different indigenous and exotic species of trees had been planted in the Green Park to further the plantation drive in Thar coalfield area.
It was also pointed on the occasion that SECMC had the resolve to plant 10 tree saplings in place of every tree lost in Thar coalfield area due to activity being done to do mining and build the power plant tree. In that manner the SECMC has doubled its obligations to meet environmental standards while doing the Thar coal mining project.
Speaking on the occasion, NFEH President Muhammad Naeem Qureshi appreciated the steps taken by the SECMC to improve environmental conditions in Thar coal area while at the same time coal mining and power generation project was being constructed at the site. He said that only greener and clean environment could ensure development on sustainable basis as steps to promote greenery would not only safeguard health of local people but they would also bring prosperity in the entire region.
He said that NFEH would provide utmost support to SECMC and like-minded organizations to promote plantation and greenery in Thar area. On the occasion, students of local schools of Thar area, Chinese officials and engineers working at Thar coalfield site, members of visiting delegation from Karachi, and officials of SECMC and its allied organizations planted 100 tree saplings to mark the Earth Day. They also collectively prayed for prosperity, development, and greenery in Thar area.
